3D Scanning and Printing of an Historic Coesfeld Cross
When the bronze cast of the Coesfeld Cross—a cherished Christian relic—was stolen from its resting place, we took on the task of preserving its legacy with modern technology. Working Pro Bono, we utilized a high-precision 3D scanner to capture the intricate details of the 1.2m tall original, centuries-old wooden cross, ensuring that no element of its design was lost.
Using Grasshopper, we automated the digital workflow, slicing the 3D model into segments that could be precisely printed and later reassembled to match the original structure. The replica was created in-house with carbon fiber-reinforced Greentec Carbon Pro material, known for its durability and sustainability. This material choice ensures strength and resilience, making the new cross suitable for outdoor conditions.
To achieve an authentic bronze look, the printed cross underwent a meticulous post-processing and painting stage, applying layers that mimic the warmth and patina of aged bronze. For longevity, especially in outdoor settings, we added a UV-protective clear coat to shield the piece from sunlight and weathering. This protective layer, combined with the durable materials and precise craftsmanship, was designed to help the cross endure for hundreds of years, preserving its legacy for future generations.
This project not only restored a significant religious artifact but also showcased the power of advanced 3D scanning, computational design with Grasshopper, and carbon-reinforced materials to create a lasting, faithful reproduction of historical artifacts.
