Advancing Robotic 3D Printing with Grasshopper and Rhino
Research and Collaboration at the MSA I Münster School of Architecture
At the MSA | Münster School of Architecture at FH Münster, we’re pioneering new frontiers in robotic 3D printing by leveraging the power of Grasshopper and Rhino to control complex, automated fabrication processes. Our research focuses on bringing innovative solutions to the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries, developing specialized parts and systems that respond to the unique demands of these fields.
The current setup includes a Weber DXR 3D printing system, featuring a Kuka KR120 robotic arm paired with the high-performance AE20 extruder. This system, with its generous build volume of 1200 x 800 x 1600 mm, allows for large-scale production and complex geometries that would be difficult or impossible to create through traditional manufacturing methods. Our extensive range of nozzle sizes further enhances the system’s versatility, enabling precise control over material deposition and structural integrity for a wide range of project requirements.
Advanced 3D Printing for the AEC Industry
Our research at the MSA goes beyond experimentation; we are dedicated to bringing practical, scalable solutions to the AEC industry. By pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with robotic 3D printing, we develop components that are optimized for structural performance, material efficiency, and customizability. Our expertise includes:
• Parametric Design Integration: Leveraging Grasshopper’s parametric capabilities, we design components that adapt seamlessly to architectural specifications, making it easier for designers and engineers to work with custom parts that meet specific project demands.
• Customizable Nozzle Sizes: The flexibility of the AE20 extruder with multiple nozzle sizes enables us to create components with varied material densities, structural qualities, and finishes, providing a high level of customization.
• Large-Scale Fabrication: With our spacious build volume, we can fabricate larger architectural elements in a single setup, reducing assembly needs and improving structural cohesion.
Courses and Training in Robotic 3D Printing
As part of our commitment to advancing the field, we also offer courses and hands-on workshops in robotic 3D printing, giving students and industry professionals the opportunity to work directly with advanced printing systems like the Weber DXR. Our curriculum is designed to equip participants with both the theoretical understanding and practical skills needed to implement 3D printing and robotic automation in their projects.
Opportunities for Industry Collaboration
In addition to our research and educational initiatives, we are open to third-party funded research projects with companies interested in exploring the applications of robotic 3D printing for the AEC industry. Whether it’s developing new materials, creating custom components, or optimizing fabrication processes, we welcome partnerships that push the boundaries of what’s possible in architectural and industrial design.
Through our collaborative research projects, companies can access our technical expertise, advanced equipment, and innovative approaches, gaining a competitive edge in the growing field of digital fabrication.
